January 27 - 31

It is Catholic Schools week here at All Saints (and I guess everywhere else in the country)!  Make sure you give thanks for the many blessings that we have here at this school, to our wonderful administration and staff, to the fantastic and selfless parents and volunteers, to the kids themselves, who make many of us still excited to come to school everyday.

Social Studies - There is a test this Thursday on Ch. 7.  We will be reviewing material in class Monday - Wednesday, students should expect a short review Tuesday night that will be due Thursday morning before the test.

Math - We are moving at a great pace with decimals, this week we will work on subtracting and estimating with them.  There should be a couple in-class assignments that students may need to take home to finish.  Expect a quiz on adding/subtracting decimals at any time.

Religion - This week we are going to devote to talking about the Catholic Social Teachings and memorizing the Nicene Creed, students need only practice about 5 minutes a night and they should have it memorized in little time.

Spelling/Vocabulary - The Unit 10 test is coming up this Friday for Spelling/Vocabulary.  Unit 10 words can be found on last week's blog post.

Literature - We have put further readings of The City of Ember on hold until we get through with Iowa Basic testing (start next week, Feb. 3-6).  Instead of going further we have gone back and discussed key details and events from previous chapters.

January 21-24

Our field trip last week to St. Pius X for Vocations Day was a fun and hopefully eye-opening time for our students.  The 5th graders had a great time meeting in small groups with priests/sisters to talk about vocations and also enjoyed dressing up in religious 'uniform' and meeting Pope Francis!  Our students were very well behaved and we received compliments on our behavior from other schools.

This week we are preparing ourselves for the upcoming Catholic Schools Week.  In religion class we will be talking about our vocations and will work on completing our poster to send back to the Vocations Day Committee.

In math we are going to further develop our understanding of decimal places, focusing this week on organizing decimals and adding decimals.  There will be a quiz this Friday on adding decimals.

Science class will keep looking at the human body and the importance of cells in it.  This week we are focusing on skin, bones, and muscles and how they work together to enable us to move as we do.

We will continue to look at the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies this week in Social Studies.  Students will be expected to take detailed notes and will have a test next week, probably next Thursday on Ch. 6 and 7.  They may use their notes.

In Literature we over halfway done with our book, The City of Ember.  Students will read through Ch. 14 for this week and will have a couple of assignments to go with.

The Unit 10 Spelling/Vocabulary test will be the Friday after this, (January 31st).  Students will have an assignment most days and will also get a chance to earn extra credit points for the test.

January 13-17, 2014

The first week back went very well, we were able to get a lot of things done and I think we set a really strong precedent for the rest of the quarter.  This week we will have a couple of tests upcoming, including a Religion test and a Vocabulary/Spelling Test, both on Thursday.  This Friday we will be gone for most of the day while at our Vocations Day Field Trip, forms need to be turned in this Tuesday (25 pts).

Reminder that the Talent Show is coming up the last week of January, encourage your child to show off his/her talents!

Math:  Finish test from Friday on division, this week we will be introducing decimals.

Science:  Senses and how our brain receives messages.  Review will be due at the end of the week.

Social Studies:  We are starting a new Chapter this week, Chapter 3, which will continue to explore the importance of the early colonies.

Religion:  Vocations of Holy Orders, Ch. 25.  Test on Thursday, Review due Wednesday

Literature:  Students have really enjoyed The City of Ember so far and I hope that they will continue to enjoy it as we delve deeper into it.  Students also have a test this Thursday on the Spelling/Vocabulary words from Unit 9.  RAH folders are going to be due this Thursday (100 minutes a week).
